What is EUA Procurement?

Under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), shipping companies must purchase and surrender EU Allowances (EUAs) to cover their verified greenhouse gas emissions. Each EUA represents the right to emit one tonne of CO2 equivalent. Allowances have no expiration date and are fully tradeable on regulated exchanges.

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) is the primary marketplace for EUA trading, operating auctions on behalf of the EU Commission and providing continuous secondary market access. As an EEX-listed participant, Varuna Marine provides your fleet with direct access to both primary auctions and secondary markets โ€” eliminating intermediary costs and ensuring competitive pricing.

Allowances purchased via EEX primary auctions or secondary spot/futures markets
No structural price difference between primary and secondary markets
EUAs have no expiration date โ€” bank allowances for future compliance years
Market-based pricing with no price caps or floors
EEX handles ~40% of global environmental derivatives volume
